About this calculator
Cats do not age on our clock, and definitely not seven years for every one of ours. A kitten reaches the human equivalent of a teenager within its first year and a young adult by its second. This calculator follows the life-stage guidance used by feline veterinarians (AAFP), so the result reflects how cats really mature.
Formula explained
A piecewise rule: the first year equals 15 human years; the second year adds 9 (reaching 24 at age two); each year after that adds 4. So for age over 2, human age = 24 + 4 × (age − 2).
Worked example
24 + 4 × (5 − 2) = 24 + 12 = 36 human years. A cat you still think of as young is, in human terms, well into adulthood.
Tips & notes
- From about age seven a cat is entering middle age; by ten it is genuinely senior.
- Book twice-yearly veterinary checks after age ten.
- Watch drinking, litter-box habits and weight, since shifts there are often the first sign.
